Help for today, hope for tomorrow
donate now!Poverty can have a devastating effect on a parent’s ability to manage and provide appropriate care for their children. The Catholic Children’s Aid Society (CCAS) serves close to 20,000 children and youth each year, and a great number of its cases involve families living in poverty.
Supporting children and youth during the most vulnerable time of their life directly impacts their quality of life. Too often, it’s the little things that become big barriers. Finding enough money for winter coats and boots. Paying first and last month’s rent. Being able to afford eyeglasses, medical equipment, cribs and strollers, music lessons, camp fees or school trips and supplies.
That’s why the Hope for Children Foundation has created its Emergency Grants Program—a high-impact direct service tool for CCAS child welfare workers assisting families. Your donation will go a long way in helping families pay for critical medical needs, winter clothing, emergency day care, or baby formula. These grants also allow impoverished children to take part in activities such as school trips, music lessons, sports leagues and educational programs.
Requests for Emergency Grants are made by CCAS Child Welfare Workers. Your donation dollars provide critical relief to families:
*
Nancy, a single mother who lived in a shelter, had not been able to find adequate schooling for her daughter. As a result, her daughter had missed most of the school year. With help from her case worker, Nancy finally managed to receive subsidized housing, and the permanent address helped her enroll her daughter in the local school. A grant of $175 from the Foundation enabled this family to purchase a school uniform, shoes, school supplies and a backpack – essentials which helped motivate her daughter to attend school with confidence and dignity.
* Amanda is also a single parent who was struggling to make her rent payments, and faced imminent eviction. Her CCAS caseworker stepped in to assist her with an emergency grant from the Foundation, which met some of her critical needs, allowing her to make her rent payment on time.
How the Grants Program Works
The Foundation delivers this program in a cost effective way by relying on CCAS’s network of professional child welfare workers. These workers help individual families work through their challenges to protect children in their own homes. They also assist families who need help with everyday budgeting, managing their household, parenting and other life skills. Where needed, the workers make referrals to the Foundation for Emergency Grants which provide critical relief for families and children in their time of need. Supporting families through this process is the most effective way of making a difference in our children’s lives.
